Making Sense of Autism

Date: Tuesday 16th July

Who is this module for?
This module is an awareness-raising module for all staff in a school community. The course will be tailored specifically for teaching assistants and support staff who work with children with Autism, either as part of general support or allocated 1.1 support. We welcome wider support roles as part of this training, such as lunch supervisors and drivers. The module provides an introduction to autism, the reasonable adjustments that need to be considered when working with autistic pupils and the planning of a person centered approach, which is essential to supporting young people with an autism diagnosis or under assessment for autism.  The aims

  • To extend your understanding of how autism affects pupils in school
  • To increase your expertise in recognising a pupil’s individual strengths and differences
  • To develop your skills in identifying barriers to learning for autistic pupils
  • To develop your understanding of what “reasonable adjustments” need to be made, in response to those barriers, to support an autistic pupil in your setting.

Learning objectives

  • Approach autism as a difference rather than as a deficit or disorder
  • Recognise the three areas of difference for autistic pupils and how these can affect them
  • Listen to and learn from the perspectives of autistic pupils and their parents/ carers
  • Reflect on your practice and implement reasonable adjustments to support autistic pupils.
Safer Handling Restraint and de-escalation Training

Aspire Academy will be delivering Safer Handling (in replacement of Team Teach) on Wednesday 17th July, please let me know if you would like a place booking.

Safer Handling we do provide Positive Handling and Physical Intervention training although our ethos is to avoid humans having to hold other humans in the first place!

Where physical intervention or even just holding someone whilst they regain control is necessary, Safer Handling provides staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage this in the safest way possible.

Following an internationally recognised BTEC programme of properly risk assessed, medically reviewed and easy to recall holds minimises the risks of injury and distress.

Specialising in bespoke strategies to manage the behaviours of children or vulnerable adults of all ages and of different shapes & sizes, we take into consideration factors such as managing SEN, learning difficulties or those who may have a disability.

The course will be held at our Revive site (9am – 3pm) on Bridlington Avenue, Hull and the cost is £150 per candidate, 10 candidates from one school is £750.

Aspire holds the AET licence for the Hull area, please get in contact if we can support your setting with any of the below training.
